The day after SOG 160 km I woke up with HRV 34 ms. My norm is 40-47. I felt surprisingly good — legs a little heavy, but a clear head and high spirits. I jotted in my notebook: "easy jog tomorrow."
A year earlier I did the exact same thing. And for three weeks I couldn't run normally.
The problem wasn't that I ignored the data. The problem was that nobody told me what it meant. Garmin showed numbers. I looked at the numbers. Nothing came of it.
Data without interpretation is noise
The average runner with a Garmin has access to dozens of metrics a day. HRV, Body Battery, ATL, CTL, TSB, A:C ratio, sleep stages, ANS stress. It would be enough to guide a pro athlete — if anyone could read it together, in context, with history.
But no one teaches us interpretation. Apps show charts. Online coaches send a plan once a week. And we're left alone with the question: run today or rest?
The data screamed: stop. The body said: go. And here lies the core problem with ultras — after extreme effort the body lies. Endorphins, adrenaline, finisher's euphoria. The ANS is wrecked, but the head wants to run.
"HRV back to normal doesn't mean the connective tissue is ready. Tendons and ligaments need 8-16 weeks after an ultra. Garmin doesn't show that. A coach has to say it."
— what I teach every athlete I coachWhy coaches know and apps don't
I've worked as a certified ultra coach for years. When I talk to an athlete after a race, I ask questions no app asks: How did you sleep that night? How do your legs hurt vs how they hurt after your last ultra? What do you have in two weeks? What have you eaten in the last 48 hours?
Context. Apps have no context. They see bars, not a human.
And this is the paradox of ultra running: the people who need the best coaching support — ambitious amateurs doing 100+ km a week — have the least access to it. A professional coach costs 500-2000 PLN a month. Most runners go it alone.
What a good coach would say
After SOG, with HRV 34 ms and A:C 2.1, a good coach would say something like this:
⚡ Morning report · Day 1 post-SOG 160 km
HRV 34 ms — 17% below your norm. The ANS is overloaded. Body Battery 22 — the body running on reserves. A:C 2.1 — you're entering the high-risk zone for overuse injury.
Your subjective "I feel good" is post-finish euphoria — don't listen to it for the next 72 hours.
Today: walk only, max 30 min. No running for 5 days. Priority: sleep, protein, hydration.
Connective tissue needs 8-16 weeks. HRV will return to normal in 4-6 weeks. Don't shortcut the process — you'll pay for it with an injury.
That's exactly what UltraFlow does. Not a chart. Not a notification. A conversation with a coach who knows your data, your history, and knows what the numbers won't tell you.
How it works
Every morning your Garmin data goes to an AI that understands ultra running — not from the general internet, but from rules coded by a UESCA coach with experience on 100+ km courses. Post-ultra recovery. Stryd power zones. A:C ratio. Training monotony. Connective tissue.
You get a report in the app every morning. Specific. With numbers. With a plan for today. And with a warning when something's going wrong — before you feel it.
Not an app. Not another chart. What a good coach gives you between sessions — when he's not there.
A word to coaches
I'm a certified ultra coach. I know what AI can't do — and I won't hide it.
AI won't see how you run. It won't sense that "something's off" despite good numbers. It won't assess knee pain over the phone. It won't be with you at the start line at 4 a.m. A good coach is irreplaceable — and no algorithm will change that.
UltraFlow solves a different problem: what the athlete does between coaching sessions. Most training decisions — whether to run today, how hard, how long to rest after an ultra — happen without a coach present. And that's exactly where an app makes sense.
For coaches guiding athletes
If you coach athletes with a Garmin — UltraFlow can work alongside your plan. The athlete gets data in context, you save time on chart analysis and get more room for what really matters: the conversation, biomechanics, block planning. Write to Kontakt — the first Coach Tier is free.
